Bridging Cultures: Personal Growth Through International Collaboration

Kira Bruns

Participating in the “Pathways to Independent Life for Youth with NEETs” youth exchange in Sofia, Bulgaria, was a transformative experience that deepened my understanding of empowerment and self-development. As a European Solidarity Corps volunteer with NART, I had the unique opportunity to both contribute to and learn from this initiative.

Day 1: Building Connections

The week commenced with a warm welcome and engaging icebreaker activities. Meeting participants from Bulgaria, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Poland, I was initially apprehensive about how we would all connect given our diverse backgrounds. However, as we shared our expectations and established group norms, I understood that our differences were our greatest strength. We quickly bonded over shared experiences, and by the end of the day, I already felt part of a larger community.

A standout moment was the session on self-perception. It challenged me to reflect on my own identity and how I present myself to the world. I had never fully realised how much my self-image was influenced by external perceptions. This realisation was the first step toward greater self-awareness.

Day 2: Time Management and Social Networks

Time management has always been a personal challenge. The workshop provided practical strategies that I found immediately applicable. Learning to prioritize tasks and set realistic goals has already made a noticeable difference in my daily routine.

The session on building social networks left a lasting impact, as I practiced expressing my needs and setting boundariessomething I had often struggled with. At first, it felt uncomfortable, but as I engaged more, I realised how empowering it is to communicate assertively.

Day 3: Health and Household Management

Discussing responsible health behaviors prompted me to evaluate my lifestyle choices. The emphasis on mental health was particularly resonant, reminding me of the importance of self-care amidst busy schedules. Learning about household management skills, I realised how these practical competencies are foundational to independent living. The study visit to the regional center that day provided real-world context, reinforcing the relevance of these skills.

Day 4: Cultural Exploration

Exploring Sofia’s cultural heritage was a highlight of the week. Walking through the city and visiting the national museum deepened my appreciation for Bulgaria’s rich history. This experience underscored the value of cultural awareness and how it fosters empathy and global understanding.

Day 5: Reflection and Future Planning

The final day’s focus on pathways to independent living and follow-up planning brought the week’s learning full circle. Reflecting on our growth and receiving feedback from facilitators and peers was both affirming and motivating. I left the session with a clear action plan for my next steps and a renewed sense of purpose.

Reflecting on the week, I realised how far I had come. I gained practical skills and learned the importance of embracing uncertainty and stepping outside of my comfort zone.

Personal Insights

This exchange was more than a series of workshops; it was a journey of self-discovery. I learned that adaptability and effective communication are not just professional skills but life skills. Engaging with diverse perspectives challenged my assumptions and broadened my worldview. I realised the importance of continuous learning and the courage to step out of my comfort zone.

A thought that stood out to me was “It’s not enough to be independent; you have to learn to be interdependent. We grow not only by standing alone but by connecting with others.” The words stuck with me, reinforcing the idea that personal growth is not a solitary pursuit but one that thrives on connection, collaboration, and understanding.

Conclusion

The week in Sofia was a pivotal chapter in my volunteering journey. It reinforced my commitment to personal growth and community engagement. I am grateful for the connections made and the lessons learned. As I move forward, I carry with me the insights gained and the confidence to navigate the path to independent living.

Have you ever stepped out of your comfort zone and into a new culture? What did you learn about yourself? I encourage you to seek out opportunities like this—you never know what personal transformations are waiting for you.
