When I started volunteering at an art therapy school in Sofia, my experience turned out to be a profound change, not just professionally but personally as well. My role here goes beyond art therapy; I also assist children who need support in their learning, and I have the opportunity to teach English to one student. This process allows me to learn something new every day and helps me grow in many ways.

The Healing Power of Art Therapy

Art therapy, using art as a tool for healing, showed me just how powerful this method can be. Children expressing their emotional experiences, which they cannot always put into words, through brushstrokes and colors is not just therapy—it’s a process of self-discovery. Touching the inner worlds of children and helping them view the world through a healthier lens makes this role so precious to me. I try to show them how they can be strong and creative in their emotional lives, too.

Individual Support in Education: Every Child is Different

In addition to art therapy, providing learning support is another important part of my role. The children at the school each have different learning speeds and styles, and understanding this has taught me how to understand them better. The individual support I provide doesn’t just affect their academic success—it also nurtures their self-confidence and hope for the future. Learning is a journey for each child, and sometimes guiding them through that journey is the greatest need they have.

Teaching English: The Power of Language

Teaching English to a student has given me the opportunity to go beyond just teaching a language. Learning a language means opening doors to different cultures and embracing new ways of thinking. When teaching English, I learn new things alongside my student in every lesson. This process is not just about mastering a language—it’s also about connecting with the world in a broader way.

Conclusion: Touching Lives with Change

My volunteering experience in Sofia has not just been about helping others—it has reshaped the way I see myself, the world, and education. When art therapy and education come together, you gain the power to bring out a child’s potential. This process inspires me and makes me stronger as a person. Every day, I feel more deeply how precious it is to touch a child’s life and offer them hope.
