Reasons and Preventions of Dropouts

Updated: Aug 24, 2023

Every year, millions of learners don't finish their programs of study and drop out of school for various reasons. Looking at the data 1.2 million secondary students leave high school without degrees — the equivalent of one dropout per 26 seconds.[1] Considering only undergraduates who left school with college debt, nearly four million college students dropped out during fiscal year 2015 to 2016 in America. The number who left with no debt is unknown. [2]

If we look at the reasons; these reasons vary according to living conditions, ideas and possibilities. Some students drop out of school because they feel that they are far behind academically, while othersfamily obligationsand do not have enough opportunities.

According to expert Jason Patel, low-income students in particular struggle with staying in school. “These students start two steps behind everyone else, with fewer resources, fewer comforts and fewer opportunities to focus solely on academics and having fun,” says Patel. “We need to control costs of education or give these students an alternative way to compete for jobs in the economy of the future.”[3]

When students leave school without diplomas or degrees, it becomes harder for them to live healthful lives, social and a cultured life and open doors of opportunity. It is necessary to achieve and advance the mission of giving up dropping out of school by meeting the characteristics of young people at risk, including persons with disabilities.

In this respect, after recognizing the issues facing students at risk of dropping out, there are some factors to consider.

  • Foundational strategies (school-community perspective)

  • Early interventions

  • Basic core strategies

  • Managing and improving instruction

First of all, parents should establish a healthy communication. Talk to them about career, future, goals and dreams. Support them in this and make sure they stay in touch with the school. In this regard, schools should also adopt early intervention strategies. Develop guidance/educational programs to understand the students problem. And create extracurricular programs to keep them connected.

Finally, the task of the student is to ask for help when faced with this situation. They should set study goals for themselves and keep in touch with school and friends.
