In the last month, I was introduced to a volunteer project and its goals by NART. This project created an amazing opportunity for everyone involved to carry out informal training and intercultural dialogue with young people. As a resource teacher, I'm glad that I can introduce Ayse, a Turkish volunteer, to the work ways, ethics, and cultural particularities of teaching kids with special needs.
During this month, Ayse not only met and worked with kids and colleagues, but also learned about different Bulgarian traditions and holidays. For instance, Baba Marta, a Bulgarian mythical figure who brings an end to the cold winter and the beginning of spring. Ayse and the kids made a lot of wrist bracelets and learned about its lore. She is very eager to learn about Bulgarian language and culture. We had a great experience while working with children, she understood the basics and the kids loved her, she even managed to learn reading in Bulgarian. That led to her helping the children with Bulgarian alphabet and reading. Our teaching routine was composed of creating a environment filled with positive emotions and specific tasks for every child and their needs. Reading, writing, solving math equations, handcraft etc. Teaching the kids customs and social norms, helping them with inclusion and making new friends.
After a few weeks of communication I learned a lot about Turkish language and culture. Sharing experience and knowledge is great in many ways. I'm glad that we had the chance to do it while working with kids. Great overall experience for the first month of the program.
